Stratatech Receives $922,000 NIH Grant

Stratatech Corporation has received a $922,000 Phase II SBIR grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences to enhance the ability of its engineered human skin products to promote the healing of chronic wounds. Wound healing requires a robust blood supply, and the inability to form a network of blood vessels is a limiting factor in the healing of chronic wounds such as diabetic ulcers and pressure ulcers (bedsores). The goal of the SBIR project is to develop skin tissue that promotes the formation of blood vessels in chronic wounds, thereby hastening their healing. The current SBIR grant was awarded by NIH based on the successful completion of an earlier feasibility project by Stratatech.

Stratatech was established in 2000 and currently operates within the MGE Innovation Center in University Research Park (Madison, WI). In addition to its products targeting chronic wounds, Stratatech is working with the FDA to evaluate the safety and efficacy of its flagship StrataGraft™ skin tissue product for the treatment of burn victims. Stratatech's products are based on a patented, unique source of pathogen-free human skin cells that was identified at the University of Wisconsin as being able to multiply indefinitely.
